Definition:

A systemic medication used off-label to treat hormonal breakouts in women. Androgen hormones have been linked to acne development. Anti-androgen drugs, like spironolactone, block androgen receptors in the body, and prevent cells from absorbing these hormones. Simply, spironolactone limits hormonal fluctuations that may contribute to acne breakouts.

Spironolactone is especially helpful for women who also suffer from other hormonal disorders, unwanted facial hair, etc. It is available by prescription only.
