Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Macules are flat areas of discoloration on the skin.

Definition: A flat spot of discoloration on the skin, macules are small in size (typically <1 cm in diameter). Freckles are common macules. Large flat spots of discoloration are called "patches." See also post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
