A form of acne caused by constant picking, squeezing, or scratching at the skin. The incessant picking causes redness and inflammation, open sores, and scabs.
Those with excoriated acne often have what others would consider mild acne, but persistent picking makes blemishes look much worse. It's not unusual for a sufferer to spend hours in front of the mirror (often a magnifying mirror) picking at their skin.
A person who occasionally pops a pimple doesn't have excoriated acne. Those who suffer from this condition have an insatiable, compulsive desire to pick at the skin.
Underlying anxiety disorders or mood disorders may accompany this type of acne.
Sufferers shouldn't be ashamed to talk to their doctor. Excoriated acne is a medically recognized condition that can be improved with the right treatments.
