Definition: A brand name for the drug adapalene. Differin is a retinoid-like compound, used topically to treat mild to moderate acne.

Differin comes in a gel (0.1% and 0.3% strength) and a cream (0.1% strength). The emollient cream is a better choice for those with more sensitive skin.

Typically used once daily, this medication helps prevent the formation of breakouts. It can also improve the hyperpigmentation caused by acne blemishes. Differin is a prescription medication.

Common side effects are:

  • dryness, peeling and flaking of the skin
  • redness and irritation
  • burning, stinging, or itching
  • photosensitivity
