Definition: increased pigmentation or color of the skin. Hyperpigmented skin is abnormally dark. Hyperpigmentation occurs when an excess amount of melanin is produced.

Causes of hyperpigmentation includes sun exposure, certain medications, hormonal changes, or a congenital pigmentation disorder.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs after an injury has healed. Inflamed pimples, nodules, and cysts often cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation macules. Darker complexions are more prone to developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
