Are you unknowingly hindering your dermatologist's ability to help you treat acne?

You've finally made an appointment with your doctor to discuss acne treatment. But once there, you find yourself feeling awkward, downplaying your skin problems and maybe even omitting key information. You aren't trying to be intentionally dishonest, but embarrassment keeps you from being completely upfront with your dermatologist.

It can be hard to talk about acne, especially if you feel self-conscious about it. These feelings are normal. Many acne sufferers avoid talking about their acne at all costs. But if you aren't honest with your dermatologist, you aren't going to get the best possible treatment.

Remember, your dermatologist isn't going to judge you or your acne. He/She wants to help you treat acne and get the best results.

So, if embarrassment is keeping you from being upfront with your doctor, how do you overcome that awkwardness? Try this:

  • Write down any questions or concerns beforehand, including a list of all medications you are using, and take it with you to the appointment. This can help keep you on track. And, if all else fails, you can simply hand your doctor the list!
  • Do you do best with moral support? Ask a trusted pal to go with you into the treatment room. But only do this if you don't mind your buddy knowing all the intimate details.
  • Always answer your doctor's questions candidly, even if doing so makes you feel uncomfortable. Take a deep breath if you need to, and avoid eye contact if you must! Just answer honestly.
  • If you just don't feel comfortable with your doctor, and can't get past it, consider finding another practitioner. You may click better with someone else.

Rest assured, most dermatologists have heard it all, and won't be shocked or judgmental. You owe it to yourself to be honest with your doctor. Doing so can keep you safe, and help you get the best possible treatment.
