Definition:
A topical medication used to treat mild to moderate acne. Azelaic acid works by reducing acne-causing bacteria. It also helps to normalize the shedding of dead skin cells, preventing the formation of new breakouts.
Azelaic acid can improve post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or the discoloration left after an inflamed acne lesion has healed.
Azelaic acid is also used to treat rosacea and other skin conditions. It is available in either cream or gel form with a prescription.
Side effects include:
- dryness, peeling and flaking of the skin
- redness
- mild stinging, burning or itching
- lightening of the skin (for those with darker complexions)
