Definition: The outermost section of the skin, consisting of five layers: the stratum corneum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum mucosum, and stratum germinativum. It contains many nerve endings, but no blood vessels. Cell division takes place in the epidermis.
Also Known As: Cuticle, scarf skin.
