Acne Mechanica

Definition:

A form of acne triggered by excess heat, pressure, or friction on the skin. Acne mechanica can occur anywhere on the face or body when these factors are present.

Acne mechanica ranges in appearance from small, non-inflamed comedones to more obvious pimples. Common causes of acne mechanica include:

  • Athletic equipment and helmets
  • Backpack or purse straps
  • Hats and caps
  • Tight-fitting clothing, bra straps, and undergarments

Treatment for acne mechanica includes elimination of triggers (when possible), salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide products.
