Definition: Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands caused by the retention of oil secretions and dead skin cells. Acne presents as inflamed or non-inflamed lesions chiefly affecting the face, neck, back, chest and/or upper arms. It varies in development from very mild to extremely severe.
Also Known As: Acne vulgaris, acne simplex.
