Weight, Girls, and Acne

I'm loathe to talk about weight, especially in regard to teen girls, because I think lots of girls feel the pressure to look a "certain way" and I certainly don't want to add fuel to the fire. But in light of a recent study, and subsequent coverage of the study, I feel the need to jump in.

The study in reference was published in the Archives of Dermatology Data was collected from more than 3,500 Norwegian teens, ages 18 to 19 years. Teen girls with a body mass index (BMI) that classified them as either overweight or obese also were more likely to also report having acne. There was no correlation between weight and acne for the boys.

Although it's easy to draw a conclusion that being overweight triggers acne, it's not that straightforward. It's possible that being overweight caused hormonal changes that makes girls more susceptible to acne. But it's just as likely that the girls who were overweight had a poor body image and were more apt to feel their acne was worse than it really was. Because the the info was given by the teens themselves, it may not have been completely objective. Even the researchers themselves say much more research is needed.

Just in my experience, I've not seen more acne in girls who are overweight. I've seen acne in males and females, adults and teens. I've seen acne in ultra-health-conscious vegans and in meat-and-potato-types. I've not noticed a correlation between weight and acne at all.

Acne strikes lots and lots of people. Who knows exactly why? What I do know, is that you don't need to know why you're breaking out to treat your acne. So start treatment, or continue your treatment, and keep trying until you get results.
