Treating Acne with Topical Clindamycin

By , About.com GuideMay 3, 2011

Follow me on:

There are several topical antibiotics used to treat acne. Clindamycin is one of the most common, and it goes by many names -- Cleocin-T, ClindaMax, Clinda-Derm, just to name a few.

Topical clindamycin works by killing the bacteria that are responsible for acne breakouts. But since acne is caused by more than just bacteria, other medications are usually prescribed along with it. You'll get better results this way. Some treatments, like BenzaClin and Acanya, contain both clindamycin and another acne treatment medication in one.

Clindamycin is also taken orally to treat acne, but it isn't as common as other oral antibiotics like doxycycline and erthromycin.
