The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA) continues to back the safe and responsible use of isotretinoin, according to their recently updated position statement.
Some of the main points:
- Isotretinoin remains an appropriate and effective treatment for severe acne. Although isotretinoin has been associated with depression, suicide, and inflammatory bowel disease, more studies are needed to prove a definitive link. Still, doctors should educate patients prior to prescribing and monitor them for these possible side effects.
- The AADA continues to support the iPledge program for everyone who uses, prescribes, and dispenses isotretinoin.
- Because of possible risks involved, the AADA opposes online dispensing of isotretinoin, sharing prescriptions, or using this medication without proper supervision by a doctor.
More About Isotretinoin (Accutane):

This is tragic and sad. Thousands are now suffering with colitis and crohns because of this drug. This drug is not worth the risk! What a shame.
The FDA needs to put a warning label on the drug related to IBD, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohns disease. I have been representing accutane victims since 2003 for these conditions. It totally ruins these kids lives. Parents really need to weigh the risks vs benefits. To many people were prescribed the drug who did not have severe acne. It was a big money maker for Roche. If there is an appropriate warning label and used only for severe acne cases and parents decide the benefits outweigh the risks then I don’t have a problem with it. This drug should not be used if there is a family history of these conditions. To learn more about accutane side effects and your legal right you can go to http://www.the-accutane-lawyer.com.
I agree. At 14 years old I had no family history of IBD, Crohns or Colitis. 4 months after taking Accutane I had severe rectal bleeding, was hospitalized for 2 weeks and diagnosed with Colitis. It has now developed into Crohns, 6 major surgeries and countless hospitalizations later I now have a colostomy. This whole endorsement seems fishy to me, probably has something to do with money. I seriously doubt they have seen first hand how this disease can destroy somebody’s life as well as their family’s.
I’ve been read several reports from Accutane users saying they developed IBD or Crohn’s Disease after taking the acne drug. Wow, sounds like the risk is greater than the reward. Shouldn’t drug companies disclose these risks, and make it clear the odds of developing such life-altering conditions.
An attorney I work with pointed me to this website for more information: http://www.hbsslaw.com/accutane. I hope it helps others who may have experiences serious complications after taking Accutane.
