No Increase of Fractures with Isotretinoin (Accutane) Use

A study published this month in the Archives of Dermatology found no link between isotretinoin use and an increased risk of bone fractures.

High doses of vitamin A have been linked to fractures. Medications like isotretinoin and acitretin (used to treat psoriasis) are vitamin A derivatives, and have been shown to decrease bone mineral density.

Despite this, those who had taken isotretinoin, even high doses of the medication, did not have and increased chance of bone fractures.

I took accutane but I didn’t know it has been linked to low bone density. I’m glad I’m not at risk for broken bones too! Thanks.
