The birth control pill celebrates 50 years today!

Is it suitable or ironic that the pill's 50th birthday falls on Mother's Day? (And Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there!)

Not only used for contraception, many women are doubly thankful for the way this drug works to clear adult acne. Used off-label as an acne treatment for years, because of the way it controls hormonal fluctuations (a chief cause in adult acne in women) many oral contraceptives today are FDA-approved to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris.

Interested in more pill history? Our About.com Guide to Contraception has some interesting factoids to celebrate the 50 anniversary of the birth control pill. Interesting stuff!
