Did Yaz Promise Too Much?

By , About.com GuideFebruary 16, 2009

Follow me on:

Yes, according to the FDA and 27 state Attorneys General.

Yaz, an oral contraceptive pill, has been approved by the FDA to treat both PMDD and moderate acne. Not bad for a birth control pill, right?

Except that Bayer, Yaz's maker, was accused of marketing their product as a treatment for PMS (for which it is not approved). The ads also didn't make it clear that Yaz cannot treat all forms of acne.

An agrement was reached between Bayer and 27 state Attorneys General regarding what has been called a deceptive marketing campaign. Now, Bayer must submit all ads to the FDA for approval. They also must allocate $20 million dollars in marketing to undue any misinformation stemming from the earlier ads.
