A New Acne Treatment Option

By , About.com GuideJanuary 12, 2009

So, there's a new drug in town. It's one of those nifty combination gels, and it's called Epiduo.

Epiduo is a combination of 0.1% adapalene (better known as Differin) and 2.5%
benzoyl peroxide. The FDA recently gave this new medication the OK.

As far as side effects go, it's typical of many acne treatment topicals: dryness, irritation, peeling. If you are interested in trying this new gel, talk to your dermatologist. You'll need a prescription, and your doctor can tell you if it's a good option for you.

Are there any OTC acne products with Epiduo?

Epiduo is only available with a prescription, and there is no over-the-counter option.

You can get benzoyl peroxide itself in OTC products. But Epiduo’s other active ingredient, adapalene (Differin) is only available with a prescription. So, if you’re really interested you’ll have to talk with your doctor.

Thanks for the question!

No “ad” intended. I’m not a doctor, so I can’t prescribe anything, nor do I suggest or recommend any treatment. Only your own dermatologist can do that.

I just like sharing which treatment options are available, especially something new.

I appreciate your comment!

I won’t rub any old chemical on my face. What is Differin made of? How do I know it’s safe?

Pharmaceutical companies’ deceitfulness is coming to light in a bigger way than ever on this very day.

Wish a chemist would write in about this. Wonder if it will be recalled in a few years for causing cancer or something. Hmm…wish something would work.

It’s not just for your teeth!

There is still no scientific basis nor findings yet that discusses how the toothpaste can actually lessen, if not cure, the spread of acne. In fact, it is one of the most widely used acne home remedy by people! It might be a result of trial and discovery that made the toothpaste serve not only to clean the teeth but also as an unusual acne home remedy! To use it, just apply it directly to your zits before sleeping. This is believed to help control the swelling overnight. Just make sure that it is not the gel but the paste.

Hmm… It’s hard to say how effective it would be, since as far as I could find on their website, no ingredients were listed. Sure seems expensive though!
