It seems more and more people finding ways to bring nature into everyday life: organic gardening, whole foods, even natural skin care products. If you're one of those people, you may be looking for natural remedies to treat your acne breakouts.

Tea tree oil is a commonly recommended natural treatment for acne. It has been used for centuries to treat wounds, abrasions, fungal infections, and more. Because it has antimicrobial properties, tea tree oil is believed to kill the bacteria responsible for acne. Many over-the-counter acne treatments contain tea tree oil. Herbalists also suggest dabbing diluted tea tree oil directly on blemishes.

Personally, I've found tea tree oil to have a so-so effect on pimples. It seemed to quickly heal smaller blemishes, but didn't have any effect on those painfully deep and inflamed zits. Just like other spot treatments, if I applied it too often it made my skin peel. I actually like the pungent medicinal smell of tea tree, but I know others who can't stand it.

If you're looking for a natural acne remedy, you may want to try tea tree oil. But remember, just because it is natural doesn't mean it has no side effects or can't harm your skin. Make sure you understand how to safely use essential oils before purchasing your first bottle of tea tree oil.
