What Causes Acne?

Thursday September 6, 2007

Those of us who suffer from acne get our fair share of unsolicited skin care advice. Friends and family members may tell us to stay away from chocolate and french fries, or admonish us to cleanse our faces more often (even though we already keep our skin scrupulously clean.) Their advice, however well meaning, can be hurtful and even make you feel as if you're somehow to blame for your acne.

Acne is not caused by the foods you eat, lack of hygiene, or other factors within your control. Acne is really caused by three biological factors: overactive oil glands, abnormal shedding of dead skin cells, and an abundance of a specific bacterium linked to acne breakouts.

Learning more about the true origins of acne gives you a greater understanding of your skin. You may also want to get the truth behind some common acne myths. So next time someone offers their words of "wisdom", you can kindly assure them you already know the real causes of acne.

Does diet have nothing to do with it at all? I know it seems like when I eat fast food my acne comes back. Is that in my head? or does diet have something to do with it?
